Before his conversion he was known as Levi, the son of Alphaeus (see Mark 2:14). He was a tax collector for the Roman Government (see Matthew 9:9). He left his profession to follow Jesus Christ and became one of the Twelve Apostles. He later died as a martyr. 

The Apostle Matthew quoted the Old Testament more times than any other New Testament writer. The link that joins the Old Testament and the life and ministry of Jesus Christ is the Book of Matthew.

Some evidence suggests that Matthew used Mark’s Gospel as a source. Matthew may have placed confidence in Mark’s account because Mark had relied heavily on Peter’s eyewitness accounts of the Master’s life.
